Summer at EssityPublished: 2018-07-20 10:15
Its been a hectic few weeks in the Employer Attractiveness team. The reason for this always make me go a little light-headed when I try and think too hard about it. As my role is focused on the “Company brand” rather than “Product brand” what I am doing day to day can depend very much on what’s going on in Essity HQ , Stockholm. For me this is awesome, as I get to work on large scale projects and with global teams, something which if you have read any of my other blogs is definitely the best bit about my role.
That upside does come with a caveat though. Sweden is quite famous for its cold winters (I can attest to this) but what is less commonly known are the glorious summers. Particularly in August. I have been to Sweden in the summer, and with all of the coastal cabins and lakes it is truly beautiful. That brings to why I have been so busy. As the winters are cold and the summers are hot, a lot of my Swedish and Scandinavian colleagues save their time off for this season, who can blame them? But that means the “quiet” period for some means a very noisy period for people like me who save days off for Christmas. I don’t regret my holiday choice don’t get me wrong but, when its 26* outside and you are knee deep in an excel spreadsheet, those Jingle Bells seem very far off.
Jealousy aside, the summer period is great for my own personal development. This is because normally, when you manage tasks and projects, there are always lots of different safety nets and support around. That means it’s easy to get input on work, to gather opinions and to some in some cases spread the work load. During holiday times when you have less of a network this forces you to become more self-reliant and confident in your decisions and to test your expertise. It’s great to know that there is always somebody to turn to if you need direction, but it’s also really important to understand your strengths, and capabilities and put them to the test. It also enables you to see your development areas much more clearly. To begin with you might try and avoid or defer the tasks where you are not so confident. However, I’ve learnt from experience to stop putting things off and really test myself. I can learn by doing and gain experience , it is such a rewarding way to develop. That being said I am looking forward to my own quiet period in ….144 days, 6 hours, 17 minutes and 23 seconds time. 😊
